Club History

Incorporated in 1956, Blacksburg Golf Club, Inc. began as a nine-hole golf course and swimming pool in south Blacksburg. The golf course and clubhouse were purchased for just $32,000 from the defunct Cohee Country Club, which ran into difficult times during the depression. The Club built a new clubhouse, added a swimming pool, and upgraded the golf course. In March of 1960, Blacksburg Golf Club, Inc. changed its name and became Blacksburg Country Club, Inc. As the Club grew, it realized that a 9-hole golf course and swimming pool would not be large enough to handle its future members.

In 1969, the Club founded its present home on 173 acres of land in the heart of Ellett Valley and sold the 9-hole course and pool to the town of Blacksburg. The Club hired Ferdinand Garbin, president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects, to design the golf course and surrounding lots. To raise money for this new venture, more than 150 lots in the neighborhood (which had yet to be developed) were sold for a mere $3,000 each!

On the evening of February 27, 1994, a fire broke out and destroyed most of the 20+ year-old clubhouse, forcing the Club to rebuild. It was a key period for the Club as the membership debated their future - to rebuild for the present and remain a golf-oriented facility, or build a clubhouse with the intent of being a true country club. Fortunately, club leaders chose the latter.
The Club has made many physical plant improvements during the past 25 years, including the rebuilding of the clubhouse in 1995. In 1999, the Club constructed a new pool and tennis clubhouse, housing both men's and women's locker rooms, poolside grill, and tennis shop.

A new deck overlooking the Club's 12th hole was added in 2001. In 2002, an outdoor pavilion was constructed at the pool. In June 2005, construction was completed on a new banquet hall and golf cart storage building. In 2009, our outdoor deck doubled in size, and an adjoining brick outdoor patio was added.

In 2010, we added a basketball court at the pool and installed synthetic mats at the golf practice range. In 2011, our newest clubhouse dining outlet, the Casual and Family Dining Room was completed and the kiddie pool was replaced in favor of a splash pad with multiple above-ground features and in-ground spray jets.

The pool underwent a massive renovation for 2012 pool season that included creating a 'zero' entry or beach style entry and replacing all of the decking around the pool. In 2013, the club opened a year-round fitness room.

2014 was dedicated to our golf course. The Club invested almost $1 million, expanding all 18 greens to their original size from 1969. Every sand bunker was replaced or moved to compete with the technology changes of the past two decades.  In addition, the Club created a state-of-the-art golf practice facility with an expanded practice tee, practice green, and short game chipping area and practice bunker.

In 2015 and early 2016, the Club underwent renovations on our clubhouse as well as our banquet hall. In 2017 the Club began an overhaul of the restuarant area and installed a new, indoor golf simulator and teaching room next to the golf shop.

After more than 60 years of operation, membership in the Club is at its highest levels ever. The Club remains a go-to destination for families who want a casual and relaxing atmosphere.
